Let Nothing Between

~ Daniel Swaim

We sang the beautiful hymn "Nothing Between" in church yesterday and it reminded me of what it means to abide in Christ, which some of us have been studying through the Abide Study. If we truly desire to abide in Him and to draw ever closer to our Savior, we must not let anything between He and us - not even friends, politics, worldly pleasures, or self. "Though it may cost me much tribulation, I am resolved, there’s nothing between."

 In the video below, they added part of the hymn "Our Great Savior" and it's a reminder that while our earthly friends may fail and our enemies scheme against us, we have the perfect and unfailing Savior and Friend in Jesus, and that is reason to let nothing between. He doesn't deserve nor does He desire just part or most of our heart, He desires and deserves the entirety of it. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with ALL our heart. If there's something blocking, something between, today is the day to repent and devote your WHOLE heart to your Savior who will NEVER fail and NEVER stop loving you, nor will He ever cease from revealing to you the riches of His grace.

The end of the last verse of this hymn reminds us that it is through prayer and much self-denial that we triumph and truly say "there is nothing between." By prayer, we focus on Christ, who is ultimately the One who sanctifies you. In prayer, you think about your Savior, but you also express your desire to draw near and let nothing between, and ask for His strength and grace to help you accomplish that. He will answer your prayers and He will fulfill that perfect work in you to set you apart. Self-denial comes by denying temptations and the desires of your sinful flesh and by "carrying your cross and following Him" (Matthew 16:24). By denying yourself, you eliminate any opportunity for sin and the devil to come in and stain your life - to place a blocker between you and God. By denying yourself, you close the door on Satan and sit down with your Lord in sweet fellowship. But to deny yourself, you must take up your cross daily and follow your God. Much tribulation will befall you, much hatred will be against you, but Christ is on your side and promises you can rest in His safety. Taking up your cross means you will sacrifice your time and energy for your Savior, and it means coming before Him with a broken and contrite heart and confessing your sins to a forgiving Father. Following Hm means you obey His Word and walk the way He walked, setting an example of Christ to the world.

There will be challenges, but are you ready to "Keep the way clear! Let nothing between"?

Lyrics:
Nothing between my soul and the Savior,
Naught of this world’s delusive dream;
I have renounced all sinful pleasure;
Jesus is mine, there’s nothing between.

Refrain:
Nothing between my soul and the Savior,
So that His blessed face may be seen;
Nothing preventing the least of His favor;
Keep the way clear! Let nothing between.

Nothing between, like worldly pleasure;
Habits of life, though harmless they seem,
Must not my heart from Him ever sever;
He is my all, there’s nothing between.

Nothing between, like pride or station;
Self or friends shall not intervene;
Though it may cost me much tribulation,
I am resolved, there’s nothing between.

Nothing between, e’en many hard trials,
Though the whole world against me convene;
Watching with prayer and much self-denial—
Triumph at last, there’s nothing between.

Humility Before God

One of the marks of a true follower of Christ is genuine humility – not a facade, but a true heart of humility. James 4 gives us an example of this humility lived out practically in our lives. In this chapter, the Greek word for “humble” literally means to be low or embarrassed. Humility, then, considers others more highly than yourself; it is not concerned with thinking less of yourself. James begins his discussion of humility by introducing us to what starts wars and conflicts in our world: seeking our own desires, lifting ourselves high (pride), lusting and coveting after what isn’t our own. You can almost see the frustration as James writes this. Every human is prone to all of these. I know I’ve been arrogant; I’ve sought out my own interests, coveted what others had. And yet here’s the human race, even believers, desiring after these things and not getting it because we think we’re too good to just ask. Instead, we force our way. We cause wars, we argue with one another, we commi...

Even In The Silence

~Autumn Stamper Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.   But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.   But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Matthew 15:21-28 This is a portion I've heard a lot; from church sermons, to devotions, to conferences, ...
