One morning, my two-year-old brother played his usual “help me” game. He climbed onto a chair, scooted to the edge, and then pushed himself off just enough to hang by his hands from the edge of the table. While dangling there, he kept saying, “Help me! Help me!” over and over until someone came to rescue him. After a while, though, my family and I started to get a little tired of helping him down again and again!
This simple scenario reminded me of God’s great love and patience for us. No matter how many times we sin or fall short, God always corrects us, gently reminding us that He’s always there to love and guide us. He gives us grace even when we make mistakes; no matter how many we make, He’s always willing to forgive us. But just because God’s patience is enduring, that doesn’t mean we should keep sinning and come back to Him whenever we want to. Besides, why would we do that and miss out on a healthy relationship with our Heavenly Father? God sees our hearts, and He knows if we truly want to come back and follow Him completely.
So, what will we choose to do? Will we do the “little things” that we know are wrong, but do them anyway because we know God will forgive us? Or will we commit to Him completely and lay all our sins at His feet? Remember, even though God forgives us when we do wrong, that doesn’t mean we should keep doing the same wrong thing. If we truly want forgiveness for the wrong things we’ve done, we need to have a true, repentant heart. That means we can’t just say, “God, forgive me of my sins,” and then go off and return to disobedience. If we’re truly sorry and try to do better, it shows God that we genuinely want forgiveness. And when God sees that our hearts are truly repentant and sincere, of course He’ll forgive us! No matter what we do, God is always ready for the return of His child. He keeps looking for us- He’d leave the ninety-nine to find just the one- to bring us back home with Him.
Whenever we’re tempted to say a “little,” white lie or do something (no matter how small) that we know is wrong, remember that God sees every little thing we do and every thought we think. He wants to guide us to do right. But also remember: even though God is always watching, He’s not waiting for us to fail! He watches us with love in His eyes and tender care for His beloved child.
However, we don’t have to face temptation alone—God helps us through those tough moments when we pray and read Scripture. Jesus understands what it’s like to be tempted; He knows how hard it can be to stay on the straight and narrow path. He felt all human emotions and faced real temptation. That’s part of why He came down for us—to be our guide in life. We can take comfort in knowing that Jesus understands everything we go through.
When the enemy came to tempt Jesus, He didn’t just rebuke him- He rebuked him with Scripture. He used the Word of God to refute the enemy. That’s why it’s so important to memorize Scripture, to help stand against sin and temptation.
But although we don’t have to face temptation alone (as God’s promise to us), we also can’t face temptation all by ourselves. When we try to do everything ourselves and don’t ask for the guidance of our Heavenly Father, things tend not to go right, and leaning on our own human wisdom can lead to poor decisions that are not guided by God. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Have you ever found yourself taking God’s forgiveness and patience for granted? His grace is incredible, but not something to take advantage of. Just because He gives us grace doesn’t mean we should keep sinning- especially when we know it’s wrong. Yes, God is patient and forgiving, but if we keep doing the same wrong thing, then how can He continue to forgive us? If we seek forgiveness, we need to have a true, repentant heart (as I stated earlier) with the intention of turning from sin.
How can we be more mindful of His grace and reflect it? Looking back on my life, I can see many times when God was so gracious to me, even when I didn’t deserve it. God is so gracious, but are we really that gracious to other people? Sometimes it’s hard to forgive those who wronged us. But when I remind myself of His divine grace, I’m reminded that I should extend the same grace to others.
Are there areas in your life where you’re still holding on to sin? I know this is a deeper question, but it’s something I have to ask. There are things in my life that need fixing, and I can’t just ignore them. The only way to truly get rid of sin is through prayer- we can’t do it on our own.
God is always there to help us stay on the straight and narrow path. We’re never alone. Of course, we’re not perfect, and He understands that. All He expects of us is to try our best for Him—and that’s what truly matters. God is patient with us, and He always forgives us if we have a true, repentant heart toward Him.
God’s desire is to redeem, restore, and walk closely with His children. Let’s live each day mindful of His grace—and ready to reflect it.
